The “Z-man”

My 8 year old, Isaiah, is going to be one of those men who acts all tough and goes to mush over puppies, kittens, babies and, one day, the girl he loves. He has this tough shell that he carries around, always showing off his latest trick and NEVER showing his pain. He really is a tough guy! But man, his heart melts at the sight of his little sister, Lydia. One of my most treasured memories comes from this teddy-bear of a boy. He was NOT happy about having another little sister. In fact, he informed me, “We don’t need any more babies and I am NOT going to be happy about it.” Even in the hospital, when his older brother and younger sister were gushing over little Lydia, Isaiah remained aloof; peeking only when he thought no one was looking. Once we were home, he tried valiantly to keep up appearances. He was NOT interested, right? On our fourth night home as I crawled in next to him to tell him is “story from when I was little” (I have told him one of these almost EVERY night for 3 years now, whew!) he asked, “Mama, can you bring the baby this time?” I was thrilled by this turn and quickly snuggled her in between us. Isaiah looked tenderly at her, playing with her little fingers. I asked him, “Did you change your mind about the baby?” He sighed contentedly, a Cheshire cat grin on his face and said, “Oh, mama, I didn’t KNOW it was going to be like THIS!” I think I actually FELT my heart grow too big for my chest. Man, I LOVE THAT BOY.

Here he is today. I begged him to let me photograph him. He is my most camera-shy kid. He was giving me these funny faces and fake smiles until Auntie Angela came up behind him and asked him about “Katie” his “friend” from school. This is what he gave me then. :-)

Emma, Emma, Emma. . .

This little lady is one of those people in life you meet and you just never forget. She is 100%, unapologetically- HER. Love this kid!

The “other” sister. . .

My post below from my Valentine’s Day session was a little heavy on the older sister. Mama asked me “Did you get anything cute of Addy?” My answer: “Well, of COURSE I did!” LOL

A one year old sweetheart.

This little honey turned one just a day or two after her session. She was so much fun! And check out her beautiful dress and bonnet hand-made by grandma for her momma and her aunties. They have all be photographed in this beautiful outfit. Wow-grandma!

An adorable new store in Los Gatos. . .

Don’t miss it! A fabulous little store is about to open its doors in downtown Los Gatos and we get to be a part of it. Modern Mini, a trendy and Scandinavian-inspired on-line store is now opening a retail location in Los Gatos, near Los Gatos Framing. We are partnering with them to provide artwork for their walls that really capture the fun and funky styles they will be offering. Check it out:

Another good reminder. . .

Since I have a new blog and all of the “archives” from the old one are not accessible here I am pulling some oldies but goodies. This one is very profound to me. Shortly after I origianlly posted this I read a book called “Making Room for Life” and the author advocated a lifestyle more like the ancient Hebrews. Your day begins at sundown (6 p.m.) which is when you lay down the hammer (or turn off the computer :-)) and commune with family and friends, rest and recharge. EVERY DAY. This also means getting out of bed at 6 a.m., which was a little scary for me. But. . . the concepts and ideas were so attractive to me and to Brian after years of burning it from both ends, we decided to jump on in with both feet. I cannot even tell you what an amazing transformation this has created. I have not gotten 8 hours of sleep consistantly for soemthing like 15 YEARS! It is an unbelievable thing. I never would have guessed how much more productive I can be. And knowing each night that from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. I am NOT on call to work, I am NOT available to do the pile of to-do’s that will STILL be there in the morning and most importantly, that I will be present for my family is one of the best feelings I have had in years. Perhaps I will share more soon, but all I can say is that I have been changed and I am never going back.

Here is that post:

An Unexpected Sabbath:

The ancient Hebrews worked, no doubt, long hours of hard labor to provide food, shelter and safety for themselves and their families. But they had a wise God and He gave them strict instructions; on the seventh day…you must REST. Somehow, in this crazy 24/7 world of ours, we have lost sight of that Sabbath…that day of rest. I know that as a small business owner, I have often allowed myself to get sucked into the endless list of to-dos and have gone for weeks or even months at a time without taking a day off to rest. I have worked hard to build my business, to provide excellent customer service, to be on-call when I am needed. It all comes at a cost.

A little role reversal. . .

So. . . for the last four years, as I have been running my photography business out of my home while raising three and then four children in it, my husband Brian has been gathering them all up and taking them on adventures while I host clients and do “work”. Since Brian joined my team in October, we have been slowly working on his role and how it would play out in the business. Today, for the first time, he worked with a client on a design project and I gathered up my little ducklings and headed off for a walk to “coffee”. Of course, not without my trusty camera! (actually, I am rather bad about taking it along, but I am so glad I did today) Here are a couple of sweet captures of my girls in our favorite coffee hang-out. Can you believe how beautiful my girls are? Well, yes, I am a little biased. . . :-) I will post some of the boys soon. . .

I love it when Alayna doesn’t know I am taking her picture. She is given to those painful “Cheese” smiles of the elementary years :-) but her face is just so beautiful without it.

Lydia snatched big sister’s hat and wanted everyone to admire how “Tuuute” she looked.
