One thing I really really love about my job is the Christmas card creation process. I plan and think and dream and just really put myself fully into the process of making my family’s card the best it can be. Just as fun (and not nearly as stressful) is the process of helping my wonderful clients create amazing holiday cards to amaze their family and friends. These will do that!! Not only do we have awesome new designs but we have sweet new die-cut papers, too. It’s going to be an awesome year for holiday cards for my lucky clients. Fun fun!!

The round cards are actually circles. So cool. And they come with a hole in the top (optional) so you can embellish with a pretty ribbon to create an ornament. Haven’t seen that before, right?

I’ve been vacationing in Bayfield, WI since I was a little girl. My family would sail around the beautiful Apostle Islands, explore the lighthouses and islands, just generally enjoy the breathtaking wonder of the largest fresh water lake in the world. This summer I had the joy of sailing on my Dad’s boat with my kids and taking in a sunset that would take your breath away. My image may not have captured it quite like it was in real life, but it is still an indelible record of the moment to keep forever.

New Camera for Christmas?

I’m sure many of you received one of the latest and greatest cameras this year, and now you’re thinking . . . cool! Now . . . how do I use this thing? Digital cameras are getting easier to use all the time, but here a few tips to get the most out of your camera.

Keep your new camera close by. If you want to catch your kids “in the moment,” the camera can’t be very far away. Find a secure place in your main living space that is easily accessible at a moment’s notice.
Get close. If you want to capture the emotion on their faces, get close. If you’re too close, your camera will let you know by not allowing you take the picture.
Limit distractions. I can’t tell you how many snapshots I’ve seen in which the subject, a tiny little child in the middle of a room full of distractions, is completely lost in a sea of other “subjects”. Again, get closer . . . can’t say this enough.
And a little bonus tip: Read the manual!

My life: Well, ’tis the season of chaos and late-nights. As a portrait photographer, I find myself doing about 50% of my year’s work in just two and a half months. It can be exhausting!! But somehow we always come through for our clients and we always get it all done, with time to spare. I may have a sore tush and a hand that is begging for me to step away from the mouse, but it will all be done, none-the-less!!

Your images: This lovely little family belongs to my wonderful assistant, Rachel. This was a sort of “farewell” session for her, as she has moved on to other pursuits and is heading back to school. I miss the companionship of working with her but enjoy our coffee dates when I come to San Jose for shoots. Now, if I could just get her to visit Milwuakee in January, that would be fun!!

Day Ten. Leaving on a Jet Plane. . . again. So sad in Milwaukee. :-)

Darn! I missed a day!! Life’s been busy around here with kids and work and some great friends. We had lunch with our friends, the Scaiffes, who are missionaries in China on furlough. We met them in California at a pastor’s retreat a year ago and serendipitously they moved to Chicago right about the time we moved to Milwaukee. It was so nice to see familiar faces. Tonight we had dinner with new friends in Whitefish Bay whom we met at our new church. It was really nice to spend time getting to know them and their children. I look forward to more dinners with them. Tonight I am finishing up my packing and heading off to California for a round of shoots and ordering sessions. So fun! Even better, I am bringing Alayna along with me as my side-kick and companion. She’ll be off with friends, too, but it will definitely help with the homesickness.

Just for fun I thought I’d show you Mr. Nate, who really thought my “boo!” was fun once . . .but NOT twice!

Day Eight. Running in Milwaukee. Sweet baby in San Jose.

My life: Wow, I almost forgot to post today. I would have broken my streak! Today was Day Two of my 5K training. There is no rest for this girl, with my 10 year old son, who is an uber-fast runner, and my husband, who is in perpetually good shape without effort, running along with me. Its great, really. If they weren’t doing it with me, there is no way I would be able to push myself the way they do. Well, specifically, the way Isaiah, my coach, does. He is encouraging, and challenging, all together. Its pretty great, actually. At one point, when Isaiah said to me, “Okay, Mom, this time you’re going to run to the stop sign, then keep going to the next one. Its not that far. You can do it.” Brian said, under his breath, “I’m glad he’s here. He can say what I wouldn’t dare.” LOL Day one I ran only .25 miles before I had to walk. Today I ran a mile, then walked .25 and ran the rest of the second mile. Walked a third mile, sprinting now and then. Much, much better than Day One, Yay! My goal race is in the Twin Cities, Minnesota, on New Years Eve, at night. Brrr . . . but I am running with my son, my husband, my sister, my brother and my nephew. How fun is that?

Photo Goodness: Okay, this might be my favorite baby of all time. I soooo wanted to take her home with me. She was the sweetest little thing. So so adorable!! You might remember this family from a year and a half ago, when big sister was born. See Here. And then from the sweet gesture their daddy did for me. See Here. I was heart warmed, this time, to photograph this family, all together again, after Dad’s tour in Iraq. He is in the reserves and will be home to see this baby grow. I love that.

Oh, the joy of it!

This adorable set of twins really cracked me up. They were high-energy from the starting gate and they never stopped! I LOVE it. These shots and more just as fun were from a short & sweet session at Crissy Field in San Francisco. Chrissy Field is such a great location and convenient for my San Francisco and North Bay clients. We will have to do another session there again soon.

I had the pleasure of capturing my dear friends and their adorable boys on the beach in Duluth, Minnesota while I was on tour last month. Our shoot got off to a bit of a rocky start. My friend gave me directions to the beach that sounded a bit like this: you go down the road past the lift bridge, then, when you get to the community center (you know, the one that is currently under construction and has no signage) you turn on 23rd AVENUE (you know, the one that is actually named 25th STREET), turn left. You will see the beach access right there (you know, the 10 inch break in the foliage on the dunes that is completely obscured) and you will be there! It reminded me of old jokes about rural “directions” using burned down barns that “used” to be there and restaurants that “used” to be named such-and-such. LOL I thought I knew which beach she meant, so I got there early and parked my self in the sand with Lydia and Shannon (who as hanging in Duluth with me). Unfortunately, the number I had was her HOUSE phone…not that it mattered because she left her cell phone at home! I ended up driving up and down the “road past the lift bridge” half a dozen times before I found a local who could help me decipher the directions and point out that I was just two blocks away the whole time!

It all worked out in the end, because their photo shoot was awesome, the boys were adorable and fun and the light at the beach was sweeter than it would have been had we started on time. All in all, it was just funny, more than anything. And since I abandoned Shannon and Lydia on the beach (and Shannon’s cell died so she didn’t know what was happening) I had to take them out for ice cream at the Portland Malt Shop, which I didn’t mind doing at all!

Thanks for sharing your sweet family with me, my friend. Next time we come to Duluth we are going out for drinks and steaks and some real catching up!

Milwaukee Welcomes Images by Anna

After starting in San Jose and expanding to Minnesota, we have now officially launched our third market in the Milwaukee area! We want to start things off by giving a big THANK YOU to Amber the store manager at the Starbucks on Silver Spring in Whitefish Bay for giving us wall space for our first local gallery. During his research trips, this coffeeshop was Brian’s office, so he got to know some of the staff. One day as he was chatting with the manager, he showed her this website, some of the photos, and a photo of one of our installed galleries, and just asked if she would ever want something like that hung up in her store; she said, “Sure, I love to!” It didn’t happen quite as fast as we had hoped, but now 4 months later, it’s up! Here’s a not-so-good photo that Brian took of it with his little point & shoot.

Ok, the grand opening was actually a couple months ago already (wow, time flies) but I haven’t shared my images from our wonderful event and the beautiful new digs our company has.
